FAQ
Interested in learning more? Below are some frequently asked questions about our DEXA scans.
What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan, also known as a bone density scan or dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is a low-dose X-ray that measures bone mineral density (BMD). It can also provide information about lean mass and fat tissue.
Are DEXA scans safe?
Bone density scans are very safe. They use a much lower level of radiation than standard X-rays, which means that the radiographer (the technical specialist carrying out the scan) can stay in the scanning room with you during the scan.
Who should get a DEXA scan?
Anyone curious about their body composition and bone density. Including those who are on a health and fitness journey looking to get the most precise measurements of fat, and muscle mass.
How Should I Dress for my DEXA scan?
Wear comfortable clothing, and avoid metal items like zippers, jewelry, and belts, because metals impact the scanners final results.
Can I eat or drink before my DEXA scan?
We advise avoiding excessive water intake right before the scan, and to avoid heavy meals right before the scan. In addition, calcium supplements alter the accuracy of the DEXA scan and it is recommended to not take calcium supplements 24 hours prior to your scan appointment.
What to expect during the DEXA Scan?
After arriving to our van, you are invited in to prepare by removing any metallic jewelry or accessories. Then you will remove your shoes, lay back on the bed of the scanner, and within 10 minutes the arm of the DEXA machine passes over your body while recording the results of your report.
How long will it take to receive my results?
Our scans typically take 10-15 minutes. During the scan, you lay still in the scanner bed and results are available immediately after the test.
How long do DEXA scans take?
Our scans only take about 10-15 minutes. During the scan, you lay still in the scanner bed and results are available immediately after the test.
How often should I get a DEXA scan?
We recommend starting with a baseline scan and booking follow-up scans monthly or quarterly based on your fitness goals. For those who are looking for the most accurate and consistent results, sign up for our annual plan which affords you one scan per month at a discounted rate.
What do I do after I get my results?
The answer to this question will be unique to each person’s own health and wellness goals. If you are concerned about bone health, you can take your results to your physician to review the report and establish a plan around your bone health. Many people will use our baseline report to begin, or modify, their training and diet plans. Some will take this an opportunity to engage with a dietician, nutritionist, or personal trainer to make the most of their efforts and time spent in the gym and planning their meals.
