The HUME Body Pod reported 8.7 percentage points less body fat than the DEXA scan. That’s a ~36% underestimation of body fat compared to the DEXA scan result from Nomad Fit Lab.

Why Are Digital Scales Like HUME So Often Wrong?

Devices like the HUME Body Pod rely on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)—a technology that estimates body composition by sending a small electrical current through the body. However, your body is not a static environment.

BIA accuracy is heavily influenced by:

  • Time of day
  • Skin temperature

  • Provides regional breakdowns (arms, legs, trunk)
  • Quantifies visceral fat—something most home devices estimate or ignore

     

When you’re tracking real progress or making health decisions, those details matter.

The Hidden Risk of Inaccurate Data

An underestimated body fat percentage isn’t just misleading—it can be counterproductive. If a scale tells you you’re at 15% body fat when you’re actually closer to 24%, you might stop pursuing fitness goals prematurely or misjudge the effectiveness of your training or nutrition plan.
