Visceral fat lies deep within your abdominal organs and can’t be seen from the outside. Visceral fat is considered more dangerous to health than subcutaneous fat as it can increase the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke when present in excess. This is another reason why having an accurate understanding of your body fat percentage is so important, regardless of overall weight or BMI.
How to Get an Accurate Measure of Body Fat and Muscle Mass
Unlike a traditional scale, a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan can differentiate between fat mass and lean muscle mass, which is critical for a comprehensive view of your health.
According to the World Health Organization, DEXA scans are considered the “gold standard” and are recognized as the most accurate, reliable, and authoritative measure for measuring body fat and lean muscle mass. DEXA scans have a very low error rate of 1–2% and are generally considered the most accurate way to measure body fat, muscle mass, and bone density.
A DEXA scan also allows you to differentiate between “good” and “bad” fat, understand the role of visceral fat around organs, and monitor changes in your body’s composition over time, which is crucial for overall well-being.
Having an understanding of your body composition allows for personalized fitness and nutrition plans and aids in setting realistic goals for fat loss or muscle gain. Rather than just focusing on a number on a scale, you should know exactly where you stand, beyond just body weight.
