Did You Know? A DEXA Scan is the Most Accurate Way to Measure Body Fat

Did you know that the most accurate way to measure body fat is through a DEXA scan? According to the Obesity Medicine Association, DEXA scans are recognized as the most accurate, reliable, and authoritative measure for measuring body fat.

Unlike other methods for measuring body fat, a DEXA scan has a significantly lower margin of error ranging from 2.5% to 3.5%. A study conducted by the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) measuring the accuracy of 3 commercially available smart scales compared to DEXA scans found that smart scales are not accurate for body composition and should not replace DEXA. The study also concluded that DEXA scans are the gold standard for measuring body fat and composition.

DEXA Scan Availability and Affordability

In the past, DEXA scans were hard to come by and more importantly, expensive. But Nomad Fit Lab is here to make DEXA scans accessible and affordable to everyone. Not only are they considered the gold standard for measuring body fat, but a DEXA scan will also tell you your weight, lean muscle mass, and bone mineral density (BMD).

Knowing your BMD is important because it can help determine risk factors for osteoporosis or help you predict the odds of a bone fracture. As a matter of fact, according to current recommendations and the United States Preventive Services Task Force, a DEXA scan is recommended for women aged 65 and older, and for women between 50 and 64 who have risk factors for osteoporosis, such as a family history of hip fractures or early menopause; men should typically get a DEXA scan at age 70 or older, or if they have risk factors for osteoporosis.
