Osteoporosis: The Silent Disease

This May is osteoporosis awareness month and Nomad Fit Lab is bringing attention to what’s been called, “the silent disease.” Osteoporosis occurs when bone mineral density and mass decrease. You won’t feel or notice anything that signals you might have osteoporosis, however.

What is Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens your bones. It makes your bones thinner and less dense than they should be. People with osteoporosis are much more likely to experience broken bones.

As we age, it is common for our bones to naturally lose some of their density and their ability to regrow themselves. But in the case of osteoporosis, the bones become so weak and brittle that a fall or even mild stresses can cause a break depending on the severity of the disease.

Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races. But white and Asian women, especially older women who are past menopause, are at highest risk. As a matter of fact, most women aged 65 and older are encouraged to undergo an osteoporosis screening.

Diagnosing Osteoporosis

Most people are unaware that they have osteoporosis until they break a bone. Diagnosing osteoporosis requires a test that can measure your bone mineral density (BMD). The most common (and preferred) test for measuring BMD is dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).

A DEXA scan measures the BMD of your skeleton and is generally considered the most reliable way to diagnose osteoporosis and predict fracture risk. It uses low levels of X-rays to measure the density and mineral content of your bones. Getting a DEXA scan is your first step for estimating future fracture risk.

Osteoporosis Treatment

Unfortunately, osteoporosis is not reversible. However, there are medications available to help with the disease. In addition, a nutrient-rich diet and exercise can help prevent further bone loss and even rebuild bones.

Talk to your health care provider to develop a prevention plan that’s right for you. There are healthy habits you can incorporate into your daily routine to help maintain your bone mass and keep your bones strong.
